Programme Structure

(I) Target Participants

Clinical doctors, nurses, and medical researchers from hospitals at all levels across China.

(II) Programme Duration and Content

(1) UK Observerships for Chinese Specialist Doctors (3 / 6 / 12 months)

These programmes offer flexible durations of 3, 6, or 12 months and are based at renowned hospitals affiliated with institutions such as Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge.

The core component is supervised clinical observership, supplemented by theoretical coursework, covering up to 327 clinical and technical specialties. Participants develop and implement personalised learning plans under the guidance of UK supervisors.

Participants in the 6- and 12-month programmes additionally receive advanced instruction from UK experts in leadership development, clinical trial design and statistics, case analysis, and high-impact academic writing (e.g. aligned with journals such as The Lancet and Nature), and participate in leadership-level discussions with hospital executives.

The programme aims to comprehensively enhance participants’ clinical research capabilities, international outlook, and collaboration potential, laying a solid foundation for future leadership in clinical research and international academic cooperation.

(2) UK Training Programme for Chinese General Practitioners (3 months)

This 3-month programme is designed for primary care doctors, general practitioners, and community physicians in China. Through clinical observership combined with structured coursework, participants gain systematic insight into the UK GP service model, training pathways, and the operation of tiered healthcare systems, particularly in primary care delivery.

The core objective is to broaden perspectives and support the development of forward-looking primary care professionals for China’s healthcare reform.

(3) UK Observerships for Chinese Specialist Nurses (3 months)

This programme focuses on clinical observership and practice, complemented by essential theoretical instruction, and is open to nurses from all specialties.

Under the guidance of UK mentors, participants also attend specialist courses delivered by UK nursing experts in leadership development, clinical decision-making, evidence-based nursing practice, and nursing research and academic writing, aiming to cultivate advanced nursing professionals with strong research capacity.

(4) UK Observerships for Other Chinese Healthcare Professionals (3 months)

These programmes are designed for key technical and management roles within China’s healthcare system and follow a general model of immersive clinical observership combined with specialised theoretical instruction, guided throughout by senior UK mentors.

Pharmacists:

Focused on advanced UK pharmacy management systems, including IPD/OPD workflows, new drug introduction, medication safety (ADR reporting, error prevention, cold chain management), and prescribing for special populations.

Infection Control Practitioners:

Based on best practices from leading London hospitals, covering IPC system design, hand hygiene monitoring, staff training and immunisation, outbreak preparedness, medical waste management, and infection control in construction and renovation.

Quality and Safety Officers:

Based within quality management departments of leading UK hospitals, focusing on end-to-end medical quality and safety management, including committee governance, risk control, Continuous Quality Improvement (QI) tools, incident reporting, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and environmental safety planning.
